The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, is set to resume tolling designated federal highways

BREAKING NEWS: The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, set to resume tolling designated federal highways to recover the $460.8 million invested in the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi Road project.

To recover the $460.8 million spent on road reconstruction the Federal Government of Nigeria plans to instate toll collections on the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi Road. The Nigerian Ministry of Works leader Engr. David Umahi stated this tolling system will operate exclusively without cash for better operational results.

This project received 85% funding through China Exim Bank together with 15% government support from Nige and its implementation came from China Harbour Ltd. Under the agreement payment stations will serve to recoup the invested funds.

A committee has been founded to execute the cashless tolling system through members selected from the Federal Ministries of Works and Finance,get and National Planning and Justice and the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC). The committee works to create the implementation framework while recommending relief stations for the corridor and develops practical solutions against potential difficulties.

Minr Umahi declared that relief stations should contain supermarkets with clinics in addition to security forces and parking facilities. International Consortium for Critical Infrastructure (ICRC) has determined 10-minute response times as the maximum target for incidents whereas plans exist to deploy CCTV cameras combined with solar lighting to improve security levels.

As per ICRC requirements the expressway has four installed tollgates to manage its entire 260-kilometer dualized route. Minister Umahi remarked that according to the ICRC establishment law both minimum and maximum toll rates must exist within the regulations governing privately operated roads.

The administration works to offer Nigerians enhanced safety together with efficient and secure transportation via new tolling technology and road safety enhancements.
