Man Robs Granny On First Date In Chatsworth, KZN, See What He Did To Her
Chatsworth, KZN – A 54-year-old man has been arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) after allegedly robbing a 66-year-old pensioner during their first date in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal.
The elderly woman met the suspect on the online dating site Badoo. On Wednesday afternoon, he picked her up in Isipingo and drove her to Galleria Mall in Amanzimtoti, where she withdrew her monthly South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant. The couple then traveled approximately 66 kilometers to Hazelmere Dam, where they spent three hours before stopping at a petrol station so she could freshen up.
It was at this point that the suspect sped off with her handbag, R2,000 in cash, and mobile phone. He then deleted his Badoo profile to conceal his identity.
Investigation and Arrest
Following the incident, the victim and her family approached RUSA for assistance. Officers reviewed CCTV footage, which captured the suspect’s vehicle with an obscured registration plate. A search was launched across multiple areas, including Effingham and other parts of eThekwini. However, the suspect remained elusive, and the search was called off around 1:15 AM on Thursday.
Later that morning, fresh intelligence led officers to Montford, Chatsworth, where they located the white Opel Corsa used in the crime. Upon questioning, a 74-year-old woman identified her son as the suspect. He was found in his bedroom and taken into custody.
Suspect’s Admission
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the crime, stating that he saw an opportunity to escape when the woman got out of the vehicle. He claimed the pensioner had become demanding, asking him for financial assistance after they engaged in sexual intercourse at Hazelmere Dam. He further alleged that her questioning regarding his use of a sex enhancement tablet angered him, leading him to flee.
After the robbery, he reportedly went to Sibaya Casino, where he lost R1,600 at the slot machines. The remaining R400 was used to purchase engine oil for his car.
Criminal History
The suspect’s mother informed RUSA officers that her son had a history of criminal activity, including a previous arrest for rape in Maydon Wharf, KZN. Since 2020, he had been remanded in Westville Prison for similar offenses. She also revealed that he had hidden the victim’s stolen mobile phone behind a built-in cupboard upon realizing that law enforcement had arrived.
The suspect was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and remains in detention. Authorities continue their investigations, with the possibility of additional charges being laid.
This case highlights the dangers associated with online dating and the importance of exercising caution when meeting strangers.
