Lafia, Nigeria – In a controversial move, Nasarawa State University has expelled 37 students for allegedly forming a WhatsApp group to plan protests against the institution’s decision to introduce a third semester.
The university’s management claims the students were involved in activities that could disrupt peace and order on campus. According to sources within the administration, the expelled students used social media to mobilize others against the new academic policy.
The introduction of a third semester at Nasarawa State University has sparked debate among students, with many expressing concerns about additional academic and financial burdens. However, the university argues that the policy aims to enhance learning opportunities and help students recover lost time due to past disruptions in the academic calendar.
The school’s spokesperson defended the expulsion, stating that the students’ actions violated institutional rules on conduct and discipline. “The university has a responsibility to maintain order and discipline. Any attempt to incite unrest will not be tolerated,” the official said.
Some of the affected students have denied wrongdoing, arguing that they were merely discussing their grievances and had no intention of causing chaos. A student who spoke anonymously described the decision as unfair and a violation of their right to free expression. “We were only sharing opinions about the new policy and how to express our concerns peacefully. Expelling us for that is unjust,” the student said.
